Knowledge and Skills Statement

Comprehension skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student uses metacognitive skills to both develop and deepen comprehension of increasingly complex texts.

Los estudiantes leen un párrafo de un texto informativo proporcionado por el maestro. El párrafo contiene como mínimo cuatro oraciones que presentan detalles importantes. Los estudiantes determinan, primero individualmente, cuál es una idea clave del párrafo. Los estudiantes forman equipos y comparten su trabajo. Juntos llegan a una conclusión sobre cuál es una idea clave de ese párrafo. La escriben al margen de éste. Los estudiantes escriben otros dos párrafos que se enfoquen en el mismo tópico que el párrafo original e incluyen ideas claves en cada uno de ellos. Intercambian su trabajo entre los diferentes equipos y revisan el texto de sus compañeros. Hacen las anotaciones pertinentes para mejorar sus textos. Coordine la tarea de los equipos e intervenga cuando lo crea necesario.

While examining a text, students should look for the relationships between the details and how the details are organized to determine what key ideas the details focus on and support. If students are unable to determine the key ideas in a text, they cannot then determine the overarching message of a text.
Students should understand that some details not only support but also help to fill in the picture of the key idea. These details tell a reader what is happening, who is affected, and why the idea matters or is being discussed in the first place. Other details cover fewer specifics or provide general information that adds to the background knowledge. Students need to consider the intended purpose of a detail in order to evaluate whether the detail is effective.
