Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

Use a rubric to monitor students’ progress. This SE should be assessed both while students are dictating or composing writing and after students have completed their work.

Example:

  • The student never contributes ideas to planning a research topic. The student sometimes contributes ideas to planning a research topic but often is inconsistent.

+ The student always contributes ideas to planning a research topic.

In first grade, adult assistant means extensive modeling to show the students what the process looks like. It is essential for the teacher to lay out clear expectations and visually show the students what they are expected to do by leading a think aloud and asking prompting questions. Also, providing students with scaffolds such as sentence stems, graphic organizers, example plans, and anchor charts will assist students in meeting this SE. This process of developing and following a research plan should be highly collaborative.
a timeline created around the research process that identifies the initial steps needed to find accurate, significant, and relevant sources to support the topic of inquiry or working thesis; intermediary steps of reevaluating the research question and revising the thesis based on source analysis; and the final steps of drafting, revising, editing, and presenting results in an appropriate mode of delivery
