inquiry research TEKS talk image

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

Observe a student over an extended period of time using a rubric.

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is unable to gather information from sources but can identify sources for gathering information.
  2. The student is able to identify a source for gathering information and use that one source to gather information with adult assistance.
  3. The student is able to identify multiple sources for gathering information and use those sources to gain information with adult assistance, but all sources are similar in type. (For example, the student gathers information from two to three sources, but they are all books.)
  4. The student is able to identify multiple sources for gathering information and use those sources to gain information, and the student is able to gather varying types of sources with adult assistance. (For example, the student is able to gather information from books, online searches, magazines, and interviews.)

Note:

This rubric may be a section included on a more comprehensive rubric.

The purpose of gathering information is to support research. Students must know that not all information will be related to their subject matter. Students must have a clear understanding of what they are researching and be able to identify when information is relevant or related to that topic and when it is not.
