Knowledge and Skills Statement

Inquiry and research: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts. The student engages in both short-term and sustained recursive inquiry processes for a variety of purposes.

Use a rubric to monitor students’ progress towards mastering this SE over an extended period of time. This rubric could be used when observing students sharing information learned during circle time or during a think-pair-share opportunity.

Sample rubric:

  1. The student is unable to understand information gathered even with adult assistance.
  2. The student is able to state one fact learned from gathered information with adult assistance.
  3. The student is able to state two to three facts learned from gathered information with adult assistance.
  4. The student is able to demonstrate deep understanding of information gathered with adult assistance by being able to state at least four to five facts learned from the information with adult assistance.
Students should demonstrate understanding by making connections between previous knowledge and new information or by drawing reasonable conclusions from the source. Students may clarify or extend their research question(s) based on the information they learned in order to better refine the focus of their inquiry.
