writing process TEKS talk image

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Provide students with excerpts from a text read in class that has been rewritten to include some words written in the wrong verb tense. Have students edit the passage to reflect appropriate use of past, present, and future verb tenses. Have students check their edits with the correct verb tense in the original text.

Further Explanation

This SE requires students to understand past, present, and future verb tense and demonstrate this knowledge by correctly editing a piece of writing.

During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their drafts and often prepare for publication by correcting conventions errors. Ensuring that the standards of the English language have been applied correctly helps the audience more easily comprehend the information because they do not have to interrupt their thinking to determine what the writer intended to say.
standard rules of the English language, including written mechanics such as punctuation, capitalization, spelling, paragraphing, etc. and written/oral grammar such as parts of speech, word order, subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure
Verb tenses indicate when in time an action or state of being occurred. The three primary verb tenses in the English language are past (indicating something has already happened) present (indicating something is currently happening), and future (indicating that something will happen at a later time). When more than one verb appears in a sentence, the tenses should be consistent.
