writing process TEKS talk image

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

Provide students with text from a book read in class that has been rewritten to include some punctuation errors. Have students edit the text to reflect appropriate punctuation marks. This can be done in three different activities: contractions and possessives, commas in compound sentences, and items in a series. Have students check their edits with the correct punctuation in the book.

Further Explanation

This SE requires students to know the sequence of steps that are included in writing such as prewriting, drafting, revising/editing, proofreading, and publishing. During the editing stage of the writing process, students ensure that the rules of the English language have been applied correctly. Students are expected to understand how to use punctuation marks, including apostrophes in contractions and possessives and commas in compound sentences and items in a series correctly when editing a piece of writing.

Commas have many uses. One important way in which commas are used is to join two independent clauses that have been connected by a coordinating conjunction (i.e., for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) to form a compound sentence. Without correct punctuation, written text can easily be misinterpreted or misunderstood.
word formed by combining two or more words or sounds by omitting a letter or letters (e.g., I'd for I would, he'll for he will)
During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their drafts and often prepare for publication by correcting conventions errors. Ensuring that the standards of the English language have been applied correctly helps the audience more easily comprehend the information because they do not have to interrupt their thinking to determine what the writer intended to say.
Specific symbols, referred to as punctuation marks, are used in writing to help the reader understand the information intended by the author. Apostrophes can be used to create contractions (e.g., can’t instead of cannot) and to show possession (e.g., Angelica’s book).
