multiple genres TEKS talk image

Knowledge and Skills Statement

Multiple genres: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--literary elements. The student recognizes and analyzes literary elements within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse literary texts.

One option for assessing this SE is through observation and anecdotal notes of student responses to texts during small-group or one-on-one reading conferences. Student responses should be scored both on ability to identify characters and ability to describe characters.

Sample Rubric:
1) The student is unable to identify and describe any characters in the story.
2) The student identifies characters in the story but is not able to identify the main character(s).
3) The student identifies the main character(s) in the story and describes them with adult assistance.
4) The student identifies the main character(s) in the story and describes them with little or no adult assistance.

In kindergarten, students should be able to name the main characters and describe something about the character (e.g., the way the character looks, the character's personality, etc.).
