Knowledge and Skills Statement

Composition: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--writing process. The student uses the writing process recursively to compose multiple texts that are legible and uses appropriate conventions.

A declarative sentence is a sentence that makes a statement or complete thought and ends in a period (e.g., A Jorge le gusta el pastel.).
During the editing stage of the writing process, students further improve their draft and often prepare it for publishing by correcting errors, adding clarity, and using more precise and effective word choice. Students may add, delete, or rearrange words or sentences and remove unnecessary information.
An exclamatory sentence is a sentence that expresses a strong emotion or feeling and begins and ends with an exclamation point (e.g. ¡Hoy comienzan las vacaciones!).
Specific symbols, referred to as punctuation marks, are used in writing to help the reader understand the information as it was intended by the writer or author. Students should know, from what they learned in kindergarten, that declarative sentences always end with a period. For example, El fin de semana iremos a la alberca. They should also know that exclamatory and interrogative sentences use double punctuation marks. That is, an upside-down question mark is placed at the beginning of a question and the usual question mark is written at the end of it. For example, ¿Cómo se llama tu perro? Similarly, an inverted exclamation point indicates the beginning of an exclamation, while the ordinary exclamation mark shows the end of the sentence. For example, ¡Me compraron una bicicleta nueva!
