Knowledge and Skills Statement

Developing and sustaining foundational language skills: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking--beginning reading and writing. The student develops word structure knowledge through phonological awareness, print concepts, phonics, and morphology to communicate, decode, and spell.

In Spanish, most letters in the alphabet have only one sound. There are some exceptions like the consonants c, g, r, x. In addition, some sounds are associated with more than one letter such as /k/ in the letters c, k, and q (casa, kilo, queso); and /j/ in the letters g and j (agitar, crujiente). First grade students are expected to identify and match specific sounds to individual letters.
Phonetic knowledge is the understanding of sound-symbol relationships and spelling patterns.
